It’s such a treat to have a Young‘Un to get art inspiration from. Jen Stark is a painter, a paper cut artist, a sculptor, an animator, and a digital artist that we studied for our project.

She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005.

We studied her drip paintings and her paper cut art before we started on our own drip paintings.

We tried creating the black drippy bands with Sharpies in our first class but it didn’t deliver the line flow we hoped for. We switched to India Ink in the bingo daubers for our heavy lines with the concentric regular Sharpie lines under the dauber lines. Success!

Then we added color to our compositions with markers, tempera paint, or a combo. They looked wonderfully graphic in black and white but took on a whole new look when the bright happy colors were added in.

It’s fun to see the students’ personalities shine through their work even in an abstract creation.

She also designed a pair of shoes in her drip design. They were so cute that I bought them and wore them when I introduced her work to the class at the beginning of this project.
