Spring is coming and our 1st graders are ready.

I’ve long admired Laura Lohmann’s Bird Nests project, so we’re trying it out.

I did a demo of my background nest painting, and we talked about overlapping broken line brushstrokes. Then the first graders picked up their paintbrushes and created something beautiful.

I love how their background paintings stand alone as colorful expressionist abstract paintings. I’m crossing my fingers that they still work as well after we cover them up with twigs and painted eggs. 🤞

But just in case…I took pics of their backgrounds before the next step.
